  • Osher

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University offers a wide selection of courses, lectures, and events designed to complement the interests and concerns of Osher Program members. From April 3 to May 1, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will offer Behind the Scenes at the BSO–course S14.111B–on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Classes take place at Grace United Methodish Church, 5407 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21210.

Behind the Scenes at the BSO

Ever wonder what it takes to put musicians on stage in front of thousands of people as they play masterworks by Beethoven or Shostakovich time and time again? Here’s your chance. Join staff and musicians from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as they lead you through an in-depth exploration of what it takes to make an orchestra run. The course features classes by Carol Bogash, VP of Education and Community Engagement; Mary Plain, Principal Librarian of the BSO; and select musicians of the BSO, as well as exclusive access to a rehearsal of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12. Culminating in a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” with Yefim Bronfman on Sunday, May 4, this course will open your eyes to the nuts and bolts that make symphony magic happen. There is a $25 charge for the ticket to the optional May 4 performance.

The Road Scholar Programs give participants an insider’s look at the BSO. In 2014, the BSO will host Inside a World Class Orchestra from April 9 through 13 and will include attendance to the BSO’s performance with Itzhak Perlman. Activities include:

    • Hear from musicians and staff to discover what makes the orchestra tick. Attend a rehearsal, meet musicians at a reception and enjoy a ticketed performance of Itzhak Perlman.
    • Go into the classrooms of west Baltimore with the BSO’s award-winning outreach program OrchKids.
    • Discover 18th-century Baltimore with Michael Lisicky, a BSO oboist and town crier at historic Fell’s Point.
