Play with the Pros: BSO musicians coach and play in all chamber ensembles

The Chamber Music Track offers a constructive, nurturing environment that takes your playing and enjoyment to new levels. Created with the avid chamber musician in mind, each participant on the Chamber Track rehearses and performs in two ensembles, a large ensemble and a small ensemble. All ensembles are led by a BSO musician who coaches and plays in the group. The full track schedule allows participants to participate in all masterclasses and workshops led by BSO musicians throughout the week including the Academy String Orchestra, Woodwind Ensembles, Brass Ensemble, or Percussion Ensemble.

Small Chamber Ensemble: Participants have four rehearsals (1.5 hours each) and a performance in a small chamber group such as a quartet or quintet. Each group has a BSO musician who plays with the group and coaches the ensemble. Each BSO coach decides the repertoire to be played after consulting with the members of the group.

Large Chamber Ensemble: Participants have four rehearsals (1.5 hours each) and perform in a larger ensemble such as an octet, dectet, or small chamber orchestra, dependent on enrollment and instrumentation. Each group has a BSO musician who plays with the group and coaches the ensemble.

Academy Chamber Orchestra (ACO) The Academy Chamber Orchestra is a unique Academy ensemble led by BSO Concertmaster Jonathan Carney. A more intimate musical opportunity for orchestral and chamber musicians, the Academy Chamber Orchestra is not a side-by-side experience. BSO musicians play principal positions in the violin, viola, and cello sections only. Placement in the Academy Chamber Orchestra requires a BSO faculty recommendation.

2016 ACO Repertoire*
Brahms Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 3, 10
Brahms Serenade No. 1

Repertoire links open in new window to IMSLP.org.
*Repertoire is subject to change.

One sectional for woodwinds, brass, and timpani led by a BSO coach is provided prior to the first rehearsal. Jonathan Carney leads the string sectional prior to the first rehearsal.

The Academy Chamber Orchestra is not a side-by-side orchestra and players need to be able to comfortably carry their own parts. To help with placement in the ACO, we would like for all NEW Academy applicants to submit a short (5-10 minutes), recent (within the past year) sample of solo playing. But don’t worry, this is NOT an audition! The purpose of this recording is to help with placement if you are accepted and it will not affect or influence our consideration of your application as a whole.

To submit a recording: 1. Upload a sound or video file with your application (or send via email to academy@bsomusic.org), OR  2. Mail a CD or DVD to: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Attn: BSO Academy 1212 Cathedral St. Baltimore, MD 21201
