Marin Alsop holds the reins for two orchestral tours de force—Ravel’s propulsive and unforgettable Boléro, and Richard Strauss’ epic symphonic tone poem, Also sprach Zarathustra, which gained mass popularity after its use in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Tchaikovsky’s masterful first piano concerto rounds out the program featuring the extraordinary talents of Olga Kern.
