Ellen Pendleton Troyer began her violin studies at the age of six in Winter Park, Florida. She has participated in numerous music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center, where she was awarded the Gustav Golden Achievement Award. At the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, she was chosen by Leonard Bernstein for two consecutive seasons as Concertmaster for the orchestra's European / Russian tours. Ms. Troyer joined the first violin section of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1991.
Since then she has soloed with the BSO numerous times and has displayed her skill in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, rock, and fiddling. Ms. Troyer has also appeared as a concerto soloist with the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado. In addition, she is the Assistant Concertmaster of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and is an active chamber musician, appearing throughout the Baltimore area.
As a result of her interest in the power of music to inspire creativity in children, she authored, choreographed and performed in the first children's concert program ever created by a BSO musician. The program entitled “Music Talks!” was presented by the BSO as well as featured in the 1996 July-August issue of Symphony magazine.
Ms. Troyer earned her Bachelor’s and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with Joseph Fuchs and Joel Smirnoff. She lives in Maryland with her husband John and her daughter Carly.
