Marin Alsop explores the great Russian symphonist Sergei Prokofiev with the upbeat and popular Fifth Symphony, a work the composer himself labeled “a hymn to free and happy Man.” She also uncovers portraits of two women known for their untamed spirits—Carmen, through a virtuosic violin fantasy performed by BSO Associate Concertmaster Madeline Adkins, and Isobel Gowdie, a 17th-century Scottish witch, portrayed in a hair-raising musical rendition of her trial and burning.
