BSO Academy Programs:
A Continuum of Activities for Adult Musicians
Now in its fifth year, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Academy programs provide an exciting range of activities for participants in our community and around the world looking to hone their skills and play celebrated repertoire side-by-side with the pros. From the one-night Rusty Musicians event to a week-long professional development opportunity for Music Educators, the BSO Academy programs engage community members of all levels and playing abilities including professional educators. These programs include:
- BSO Academy Week
The week-long BSO Academy brings together passionate, adult instrumental musicians from all over the United States for an exceptional experience with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Led by the exceptional Maestra Marin Alsop, participants play side-by-side with the BSO in rehearsals and performances and experience master classes, lectures, chamber music coachings, chamber orchestra, and sectionals led by orchestra members and experts in the field. The Academy provides an immersive experience for participants who desire an intensive learning experience. In 2014, the Academy will feature three tracks: the Orchestral Track, the Arts Administrator Track, and a new Chamber Track.
- BSO Music Educators Academy in Collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (new)
New in 2014, the BSO and UMBC will collaborate on a unique professional development opportunity for Music Educators around the country. Designed to inspire and invigorate Vocal and Instrumental Music Educators as well as those pursuing a career in Music Education, this program will immerse participants in the world of the orchestra by playing, learning, and performing side-by-side with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Case Scaglione. Featuring classes by BSO musicians and faculty members from UMBC, participants will hone their conducting technique through workshops with Case Scaglione culminating in select participants conducting the BSO, explore the applications of technological advances to music-making, gain new insight into repertoire and performance practices, and learn insider tips on secondary instruments through clinics and instrument family overview courses. Participants will rehearse major symphonic and choral works with the BSO culminating in a final performance on stage at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall with the BSO. This course is also available for 3 graduate credit hours through UMBC.

A one-night event, the BSO Rusty Musicians brings together amateur musicians with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to rehearse and play through major symphonic works.
- Instrument Clinics
Full one-day events, the Instrument Clinics provide amateur musicians with the opportunity to refine their playing skills through technique-building classes focused on sound production, musicianship, practice techniques and ensemble skills.
- Chamber Music Weekends
Two-day events in which amateur musicians play in side-by-side chamber groups with BSO musicians, the chamber music weekends offer participants a way to rehearse and perform celebrated chamber works with the pros.
