Performing orchestral excerpts is one part of your audition requirements (in addition to scales, a solo work of the student’s choice, and sightreading).
To prepare your excerpts:
- Print the excerpts appropriate to you instrument and desired orchestra.
- You should prepare the [bracketed] sections.
- If you would like to be considered for more than one orchestra, you must prepare excerpts for the highest level orchestra for which you wish to audition.
Youth Orchestra (YO) Excerpts – Advanced
*Percussion – There are no excerpt or scale requirements. You should prepare the following: snare drum, timpani, and mallet solos. You must also be able to demonstrate ability on bass drum, cymbals, and timpani tuning.
**Harp – You should prepare a solo in addition to the required excerpt.
Concert Orchestra (CO) Excerpts – Intermediate/Advance
*Percussion – There are no excerpt or scale requirements. You should prepare the following: snare drum solo; timpani or mallet solo. You must be able to demonstrate ability on bass drum and cymbals; demonstrate familiarity with timpani tuning.
String Orchestra (SO) Excerpts – Beginner/Intermediate
