BSO Academy Internship

Supervisor: Annemarie Guzy, Director of Education
Term: June 3-22, 2013
Compensation: Small stipend, free parking, complimentary BSO tickets, opportunity to attend workshops and rehearsals with Academy participants.

Hours:
Weeks of June 3 & 10: 2-5 days per week Monday-Friday, depending on needs & intern’s availability
June 15-22: 7+ hours per day

About the Academy:         
The week-long BSO Academy brings together passionate adult instrumental musicians from all over the United States for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Led by the exceptional Maestra Marin Alsop, participants play side-by-side with the BSO in rehearsals and performances and experience master classes, lectures, chamber music coachings, and sectionals led by orchestra members and experts in the field. The Academy provides an immersive experience for participants who desire an intensive learning experience.

Responsibilities:
Intern will assist the Education department with event logistics leading up to and during the week of the BSO Academy (June 15-22, 2013). Duties include but are not limited to: assisting with the running of the day-to-day logistics for this monumental program, generating and compiling informational packets for participants, creating and posting all signage, purchasing supplies, assisting with event set-up and logistics, and assisting participants throughout the week.

Qualifications:
Strong verbal, written and organization skills are required. Computer proficiency with knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must.  Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, willingness to learn, attention to detail, and a sense of creativity are highly valued qualities.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Strathmore Development Internship

Supervisor: Stephanie Johnson, Donor Relations Manager
Location: The Music Center at Strathmore
Term: Summer 2013
Compensation: Academic Credit
Hours: Minimum 15 hours per week

With over 90 years of history, the Baltimore Symphony is internationally recognized as having achieved a preeminent place among the world's most important orchestras. The BSO made musical history at the start of the 2007-2008 season, when Maestra Marin Alsop became the Orchestra’s 12th music director, making her the first woman to head a major American orchestra. In 2005, the Music Center at Strathmore, a 1,976-seat concert hall and multi-disciplinary education center, opened its doors. With the opening of the Music Center at Strathmore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra became the only major American orchestra to have permanent, year-round homes in two metropolitan areas, performing more than 30 concerts at the Music Center annually.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Development Department raises more than half of the organization's operating costs through contributions by government, foundations, corporations, and individuals. The BSO’s Development Intern will work closely with all members of the BSO at Strathmore Development Department, gaining exposure to a highly productive team of professional fundraisers. 

The intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Development duties:

  • Research current and prospective donors
  • Screen current donor/subscriber base to identify prospective new members and upgrades
  • Prepare acknowledgement letters and fulfill membership benefits
  • Assist patrons with donor relation and stewardship needs

Special Event duties:

  • Participate in event preparation and planning
  • Create invitations and programs for donor events
  • Manage event reservations
  • Assist with event logistics the day of the event

Other Administrative duties:

  • Data processing as needed
  • Research projects on areas of interest or need
  • Other tasks and projects as necessary

The ideal candidate will be a current graduate or undergraduate student or a recent college graduate of a discipline related to development, special events, non-profits or the arts.

Essential skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency - knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and mail merges.
  • High-level organization and the ability to multi-task
  • Problem solving and a willingness to learn
  • Strong internpersonal skills and a sense of creativity
  • Experience with layout/design and database skills a plus.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Development Internship

Supervisor:  Jennifer Barton, Individual Giving Manager

Term: Summer 2013
Compensation:  Academic credit
Hours:  Minimum 15 hours per week

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Development Department is a fast-paced work environment that raises more than half of the organization's revenue from government, foundations, corporations, and individuals. The Development team’s role in the organization includes a high-level of donor stewardship in addition to soliciting gifts through personal solicitations, telefundraising, mailings, and special events. The BSO’s Development Intern will work closely with members of the Development Department, gaining exposure to a highly productive team of professional gift officers and fundraisers.

The intern's duties will be tailored to his/her interests and skill set, including but not limited to:

  1. Providing personalized customer service and superior donor relations
  2. Researching current and potential donors
  3. Assisting in acknowledgement preparation and donor benefit fulfillment
  4. Providing helpful assistance for Bolt for the BSO, the BSO's marathon fundraising team
  5. Creating invitations and programs for Membership events
  6. Managing event reservations
  7. Acting as a representative of the Orchestra on-site at special events as needed
  8. Completing small research projects on topics useful to Development staff
  9. Other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will be a current graduate/undergraduate student or a recent college graduate of a discipline related to music, arts management, marketing, or communications  with an interest in pursuing a career in arts management, philanthropy or the non-profit sector.

We are seeking candidates interested in the field of arts management who are proactive, enthusiastic, goal-oriented and responsible and have a strong work ethic and passion for the arts.

Essential skills include:

  1. strong verbal and written communication skills
  2. computer proficiency,  knowledge of Microsoft Office (Powerpoint, Word, Excel)excellent interpersonal skills. Mail merge knowledge necessary.
  3. ability to multi-task
  4. willingness to learn
  5. Experience with layout/design or database maintenance a plus.

Public Relations Internship with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Hours: 12-15 hours per week

   
INTRODUCTION
The BSO public relations department is responsible for the organization's public image and for strategic media relations surrounding all Orchestra programming, special events, presentations, major announcements and more. This internship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in learning about media relations, or the workings of a major symphony orchestra or a nonprofit organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The intern's projects will include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing and editing press releases
  • Participation in publicity planning and strategy sessions
  • Preparation, organization and distribution of press clippings and other press materials
  • Pitching local media
  • Writing of additional press materials, publications pieces, etc.
  • Light clerical work
  • Projects as assigned, based on department needs and intern's interests

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidates will have strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; basic facility with computers and technology; impeccable attention to detail; positive energy and a willingness to "pitch in" wherever needed. The position requires flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. An interest in symphonic music or the performing arts is helpful, but not required. Candidates should also have an interest in gaining valuable and direct experience in the PR office of a major performing arts organization.
