INTRODUCTION
The BSO’s marketing department is responsible for promoting and generating sales for the many aspects of the world-class Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The 2010-2011 season marks the Orchestra’s 95th season and the third with Music Director Marin Alsop, who made international headlines when she became the first female to lead a major American symphony orchestra. The BSO presents nearly 160 concerts throughout the season across a diverse range of series including SummerFest, Off the Cuff, SuperPops and mid-week education concerts serving public, private schools and home-school students in Baltimore, Baltimore City, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Howard counties. This internship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in gaining valuable and direct experience in the marketing department of a major performing arts organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The marketing intern’s projects will include, but are not limited to:
- Researching and assisting in the implementation of grassroots promotions and partnerships to generate ticket sales
- Maintaining concierge desk and materials
- Assisting in the execution of subscriber retention, loyalty and recognition programs
- Clipping BSO print advertisements for archives
- Pursuing group sales opportunities
- Supporting marketing initiatives at select concerts
- Projects as assigned, based on department needs and intern's interests
The marketing intern will also assist with administrative and general marketing duties, and at times support the BSO Marketing Department at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland. The intern is eligible for complimentary tickets when available.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should possess strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and other basic technologies; impeccable attention to detail; the ability to multi-task; positive energy and a willingness to "pitch in" wherever needed. This position requires flexibility, taking initiative and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. An interest in symphonic music or the performing arts is helpful, but not required. College students at the junior, senior and graduate levels studying marketing, communications or equivalent fields are preferred. Please include a list of completed relevant coursework.

E-Commerce & Digital Marketing Internship

The BSO's E-Commerce & Digital Marketing Team is responsible for promoting many aspects of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra including but not limited to online advertisement, e-communications, overall web presence, viral marketing and guerrilla marketing initiatives. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is internationally recognized as having achieved a preeminent place among the world's most important orchestras and continues to stay at the cutting edge of technology. The BSO presents nearly 160 concerts throughout the season across a diverse range of series including SummerNights, Off the Cuff, Classical Saturdays and Thursdays, SuperPops and mid-week education concerts serving public, private schools and home-school students in Baltimore, Baltimore City, Montgomery, Prince George's and Howard counties. This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop a strong foundation in modern marketing techniques as well as experience the diversity and excitement of working with a major symphony orchestra or a nonprofit organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Content management for social networking websites as well as friend communication and contest implementation

Assisting with the development and implementation of promotions and partnerships to generate tickets sales

Designing and proofing of online advertisement

Designing and proofing of ePatrons emails

Participation in planning and strategy sessions

Supporting marketing initiatives at select concerts

Assisting with the expansion of the BSO's online presence, viral marketing campaigns and grassroots marketing efforts

The E-Commerce and Promotions Marketing intern will also assist with administrative and general marketing duties, and at times support the BSO Marketing Department at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, MD
The intern is eligible for complimentary tickets when available.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should possess strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; basic facility with computers and technology; basic html knowledge preferred; a basic knowledge of Photoshop and artistic abilities; impeccable attention to detail; positive energy and an eagerness to learn. A basic knowledge and interest in symphonic music or the performing arts is helpful, but not required. Candidates should also have an interest in gaining valuable and direct experience in the marketing department of a major performing arts organization. The position requires flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. College students at the junior, senior and graduate levels studying marketing, communications, music administration or public relations are preferred. The BSO’s Development Intern will work closely with all members of the Development Department, gaining exposure to a highly productive team of professional gift officers and fundraisers.
The intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Development duties:
- Doing research on current and potential donors
- Preparing acknowledgement letters and fulfilling membership benefits
- Assisting patrons with donor relation and stewardship needs
Special Event duties:
- Participating in event planning meetings
- Managing event reservations
- Assisting with event logistics the day of the event
- Soliciting bids from mail houses and catering companies
- Creating invitations and programs for Membership events
Other Administrative duties:
- Keeping files orderly
- Other tasks and projects as necessary
- Data processing as needed
The ideal candidate will be a current graduate or undergraduate student or a recent college graduate of a discipline related to development, special events, non-profits or the arts. Essential skills: Strong verbal and organization skills are required, computer proficiency, knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and mail merges. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task, willingness to learn, friendly phone demeanor and a sense of creativity are highly valued qualities. Experience with layout/design or computer database skills a plus.
- Minimum 15 hours per week, schedule is flexible, some nights and weekends possible.
- Free garage parking for a maximum of three days a week, if needed.

Public Relations Internship with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

The BSO public relations department is responsible for the organization's public image and for strategic media relations surrounding all Orchestra programming, special events, presentations, major announcements and more. This internship is an excellent opportunity for those interested in learning about media relations, or the workings of a major symphony orchestra or a nonprofit organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The intern's projects will include, but are not limited to:
- Writing and editing press releases
- Participation in publicity planning and strategy sessions
- Preparation, organization and distribution of press clippings and other press materials
- Pitching local media
- Writing of additional press materials, publications pieces, etc.
- Light clerical work
- Projects as assigned, based on department needs and intern's interests
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidates will have strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; basic facility with computers and technology; impeccable attention to detail; positive energy and a willingness to "pitch in" wherever needed.
