Although he played bass for fun as a child, Eric Stahl never thought he would pursue classical music as a career. His Father, George Stahl, played in the bass section of the Minnesota Orchestra for thirty years, and Mr. Stahl thought it would be unoriginal to follow in his footsteps. It wasn’t until he attended the National Music Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy that playing bass professionally became his dream. He completed his education at Northwestern University and accepted a position in the bass section of the Kansas City Philharmonic where he played for one year until venturing to Baltimore. He has been with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ever since.
Mr. Stahl's teachers included Joseph Guastafeste, Principal Bass with the Chicago Symphony, Warren Benfield, and of course, his father. Musical experiences that helped to shape his playing include listening to the Chicago Symphony and to violinist David Oistrakh.
In addition to his performance engagements with the Baltimore Symphony, Mr. Stahl plays bass with the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and he plays electric bass with his church's musical group. He might also be found restoring his old Victorian house, tinkering with antique Volkswagens, canoeing, backpacking, camping, surfing, spending time with his wife, Karen or playing with his children, Sonja and Jakob.
