Chamber Music Performances:

April 7, 2013

When not rehearsing or performing on stage…I enjoy spending time with my wife Kathryn, and son John Edgar.  My son and I share time playing baseball, skiing, or biking to Pennsylvania.  We are quite a team.  I have a couple of old British cars I am constantly working on which use up quite a bit of my time away from the BSO.  I also run a company that makes small percussion instruments:  “Locke Percussion.”  In addition, I teach at The Baltimore School for the Arts.  They are incredibly supportive of my endeavors and are more like extended family than colleagues.

If I had not become a professional musician…I probably would have become a professional chef-an outstanding and highly trained one like my cousin, John Piliouras, who is a chef at Molyvos, a restaurant near Carnegie Hall in NYC.

To unwind, I listen to…classical chamber music-music with little or no percussion or just timpani.

In the car, you would…usually find me listening to rock music on the car radio for the ride home and turn the volume knob on 11!

What is the ring tone on your cell phone?  Whatever the phone offers-nothing special.

What is the last book you read?  I’m interested in investing.  Wall Street fascinates me.  I read a LOT of books and literature on investing.

What is you dream or if you have already achieved it, what was it?  Life is too short-there are so many things I’d like to do.  Traveling the world would take years.

The non musical accomplishment that I am most proud of would be when I…sailed back to Maryland from Bermuda during a hurricane.  That was memorable.

What is your guilty pleasure?  Chocolate.  I LOVE chocolate.

My favorite vacation spot is…the beach-any beach.  I want to live out my days on a beach (with some percussion instruments at hand, of course).

The last movie I saw was…Pirates of the Caribbean.  Who doesn’t wish to be a pirate at some time or other during life?  At least I do.

How do you prepare for a performance?  Perfect practice makes perfection, or near perfection, on stage.  Hours and hours of both mental and physical practice.

I really like the violin.  I tried playing it for a year and gave up.
