Baltimore Symphony Orchestra - Musician Biography

Mary Bisson is entering her 25th season as a horn player with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Born in Kentucky, she started her career playing in her hometown orchestra in Owensboro at age thirteen, and by nineteen, had went on to play principal horn in the Maracaibo Symphony in Venezuela and then in the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra. After playing in the Louisville Orchestra and the Chautauqua Symphony, she won the third horn audition for the BSO and has been there ever since.

Ms. Bisson is an active teacher, soloist, chamber musician and recitalist. She has appeared on numerous recordings with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and has recently released a solo CD, Evening Banquet – Music for Horn & Soprano, produced by Barry Tuckwell. An acclaimed soloist, Bisson has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Loudon Symphony, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. She has been a featured artist at the International Horn Society, Sarasota Music Festival and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Ms. Bisson studied horn with Philip Farkas at Indiana University and is a contributor to the book, Phil Farkas: Legacy of a Master.

In additional, she has given recitals and master classes at Florida State University, Interlochen Arts Academy, University of Oregon, Towson University, Gettysburg College, Mesa State College, Peabody Conservatory and Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia. She is also a founding member and director of the Barry Tuckwell Institute.

Mary was on the faculty at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore for fourteen years. She recently joined the Sunderman Music Conservatory at Gettysburg College where she teaches and plays with the faculty Woodwind Quintet and Brass Trio. She lives in Mt. Washington with her partner Karen and their daughter Martha (a student at Baltimore School for the Arts) plus their two dogs and a cat.
