The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall with its annual gala celebration, a black-tie affair featuring fine dining, a silent auction and entertainment. In honor of the community spirit which has made the Meyerhoff one of Baltimore's premier cultural destinations, the Gala Concert will feature community-based arts groups performing with the BSO under the baton of Maestra Marin Alsop in her inaugural gala. In a BSO "first," tickets for the Gala Concert will be available to the public for just $25.

Composers in Conversation: John Adams

Among the most acclaimed composers of our day, John Adams opens the BSO's new "Composers in Conversation" series. Mr. Adams will be in residence with the BSO September 26 through October 6, as the Orchestra performs three of his works, including Fearful Symmetries, which Maestra Alsop leads in her inaugural concerts. "Composers in Conversation" is an opportunity to engage with each of the 11 contemporary composers featured throughout the 2007-2008 season.

In her historic inaugural concerts as the BSO's 12th music director, Maestra Marin Alsop leads the Orchestra in two monumental works: John Adams' Fearful Symmetries and Mahler's Symphony No. 5. These two contemporary works are paired with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.

Baltimore Symphony Associates Fashion Show and Luncheon

The Baltimore Symphony Associates, the volunteer arm of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, will hold their first Fashion Show and Luncheon in support of BSO education programs. Current members of the Associates will model apparel by Talbots, and will also be on hand to answer questions about the BSO and membership in the Baltimore Symphony Associates.

Tan Dun: The Map: Concerto for Cello, Video and Orchestra ‡

Oscar winner for the film score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, composer and conductor Tan Dun takes the orchestra from the Russian gateway of Asia across to his native China, starting with the music of Shostakovich and ending with his own multimedia work. Tan Dun's The Map combines video performances of traditional Chinese street performers with a unique palette of symphonic colors and melodies. A solo cello line, originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma, will be performed by BSO Principal Cellist Ilya Finkelshteyn, highlighting the beautiful sonorities so essential to ancient Chinese music.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 8

Conducted and hosted by the composer himself, Frankenstein!! is HK Gruber's outrageously funny collection of songs for orchestra. A bumping, creaking score like nothing you've heard before, Frankenstein!! is paired with Saint-Saëns' Danse macabre, a work used extensively for horror movies and haunted houses. In contrast, the program ends with Beethoven's light-hearted Eighth Symphony, complete with musical jokes, tricks and treats.

In conjunction with these performances, the BSO presents College Night. Following both Friday and Saturday's concerts, college students are invited to an after-party featuring music, prizes and snacks.

Students are eligible for $10 tickets, which may be purchased in advance or "day-of," via phone or in-person. A valid student ID is required for each ticket purchase.


BSO at Strathmore Special Event: The Homes of Garrett Park

The BSO at Strathmore will present "The Homes of Garrett Park," a tour of historic homes in the small Garrett Park community, just outside of Bethesda, Md. The event will feature tours of four stunning Queen Anne Victorian homes, a traditional home, and the Mansion at Strathmore, itself an historic 19th-century property. Organized by the Women of the Symphony Society, the two-day event will benefit the BSO at Strathmore's music education and community outreach programs.

Ninety-minute tours will proceed by mini-bus to Garrett Park at regular intervals from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on October 19 and October 20.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 "day-of," and may be purchased by calling the BSO at Strathmore Ticket Office at 1.877.BSO.1444, online at www.BSOmusic.org, or in person at the Music Center at Strathmore Ticket Office.

Complete event information will be announced in late summer.

Maestra Alsop leads the BSO in Tchaikovsky's poignant Symphony No. 5, which the composer called "a complete submission to fate." The program also showcases renowned pianist Garrick Ohlsson, an artist widely recognized for his powerful performances and dynamic lyricism, performing Barber's romantically charged, Pulitzer Prize-winning Piano Concerto. A remarkable interpreter of Brahms, Maestra Alsop will also lead the composer's Tragic Overture.

The evening closes with a celestial powerhouse inspired by the beauty of the Austrian landscape: Schubert's Symphony No. 9 in C Major.

Arild Remmereit returns to the podium to lead the BSO in a program of widely admired works. Known for its melodic themes, encompassing energy and sentiment expression, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is performed by BSO Associate Concertmaster Madeline Adkins. Schumann's First Symphony, the "Spring Symphony" is widely recognized as his most popular work in the genre, and was premiered under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn, Schumann's contemporary and one of his musical inspirations.

Inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us, this performance highlights the radiant colors of honored American composer Aaron Jay Kernis's Newly Drawn Sky. The piece is a lyrical reflection of an oceanside memory with his children. Violinist Timothy Fain joins the orchestra for Kernis's Lament and Prayer, and, continuing the Beethoven cycle, Marin Alsop leads the composer's beloved "Pastoral" Symphony, an idyllic expression of nature.

World renowned for their heavenly voices and remarkable talent, the Vienna Boys' Choir returns to the Music Center at Strathmore after selling out their last appearance there. Founded in 1948, their beautiful voices have gripped audiences for decades, filling concert halls with the powerful influences of Austria and the Netherlands. Note: The BSO will not be performing in this concert.

For over 25 years Edward Polochick has lead the BSO and the Concert Artists of Baltimore Symphonic Chorale in Handel's cherished oratorio, Messiah. The Baltimore Sun called his approach to the work "distinctive," and containing some of the most effective interpretative choices." For the first time, Polochick and the BSO also bring this work to the orchestra's second home, the Music Center at Strathmore.

In a modern-day tale, Mackey's Time Release pits the marimba as the underdog in the orchestra in this U.S. premiere with percussionist Colin Currie. Scholars, doctors and other experts discuss Beethoven's hearing loss, whether he died from lead poisoning, his personal life and the extra-musical components that contributed to his exceptional genius-all with musical excerpts from Beethoven's nine iconic symphonies led by Marin Alsop and performed by the BSO. Actual artifacts including manuscripts, first editions, letters and locks of Beethoven's hair will be on display in the lobby of the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

The BSO and Music Director Marin Alsop team up with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet to perform Gershwin's beloved Rhapsody in Blue, heard in the original orchestration for the Paul Whiteman Band along with the composer's Concerto in F. The most famous jazz group of the 1920s, the Paul Whiteman Band originally commissioned Rhapsody in Blue, and this performance offers the chance to hear the work in a unique original light.

Traversing the Andes and wandering through Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail is among the oldest and most extensive roads in South America. Led by conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, this performance travels that ancient highway across the continent. Showcasing a multimedia display of South American sights, the music leads the audience through Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia, accented by the native dance of each region and the music of Ginastera, Golijov and Gabriella Frank.

BSO Associate Concertmaster Madeline Adkins leads featured BSO musicians in a compilation of spirited concertos by Vivaldi, widely recognized as the master of the Baroque instrumental concerto. The concert also includes Handel's Concerto Grosso, as well as Biber's Battalia, a work dedicated to Bacchus, the god of wine and merrymaking.

Joan Tower: Concerto for Orchestra
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, "Choral"

Maestra Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Choral Arts Society conclude the 2007-2008 season in grand fashion with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The program will also include the dynamic Concerto for Orchestra by American composer Joan Tower. This program will be broadcast on XM Satellite Radio (XM Classics 110) on Friday, June 27 at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 29 at 3:00 p.m.
