Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces Summer Programs at Meyerhoff, Oregon Ridge, Strathmore and Pier Six
2008 "Summer Nights" Features Star-Spangled Spectacular, Celebration of Leon Fleisher's 80th Birthday, Tributes to The Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin
Baltimore, Md. (April 14, 2008)-From classical favorites to rock 'n' roll classics, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra today announced "Summer Nights," a summer concert season featuring a wide variety of musical offerings. Highlights include performances by renowned pianist and Baltimorean Leon Fleisher in celebration of his 80th birthday; Vivaldi and Piazzolla's Four Seasons; and tributes to The Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin. Beginning on Thursday, July 3 with the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular, the BSO's summer season takes place at four venues: its two year-round homes, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall (Baltimore) and the Music Center at Strathmore (North Bethesda); the Orchestra's outdoor summer home, Oregon Ridge Park (Cockeysville); and Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. In addition to its "Summer Nights" programs, the BSO will also offer a free one-hour concert on Saturday, July 19 as part of Artscape, Baltimore's annual free celebration of the arts. See below for artist biographies, a complete calendar of events and venue and ticketing information.
Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall: Four Seasons, A Video Game Symphony, Leon Fleisher's 80th Birthday and The Grateful Dead
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra begins summer at the Meyerhoff on Friday, July 11 with a concert featuring Vivaldi's masterful set of violin concertos, Four Seasons, interwoven with Piazzolla's tango-infused Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Though 250 years separate the works, Vivaldi and Piazzolla's Seasons share the vivid, evocative orchestrations appropriate to each season. This unique program is led by BSO concertmaster Jonathan Carney.
On Friday, July 18, the video-gaming craze comes to the Meyerhoff as the BSO performs PLAY! A Video Game Symphony. Featuring the Orchestra and a full chorus, PLAY! includes award-winning music from games such as Legend of Zelda ®, Final Fantasy ®, World of Warcraft ® and Super Mario Bros ®, as well as video-game graphics projected on screens above the stage.
Widely considered one of the premier musicians of our time, Baltimore's long-time resident Leon Fleisher has performed with the world's greatest orchestras for more than six decades. On Friday, July 25, Fleisher joins the BSO as pianist and conductor in a celebration honoring him on his 80th birthday. The all-Mozart program includes Symphony No. 35, "Haffner;" Symphony No. 40, "The Great G Minor;" and Piano Concerto No. 12.
Summer at the Meyerhoff concludes on Friday, August 1 with the world premiere performance of Dead Symphony No. 6, an orchestral tribute to the legendary rock band, The Grateful Dead. Known not only as counterculture icons, but also for their great musicianship, the group stands alone in its embrace of genres as diverse as gospel, funk, jazz, blues and psychedelic rock-complex musical forms which lend themselves to symphonic settings. Orchestrated by composer Lee Johnson, the Dead Symphony weaves Grateful Dead hits within a classical backdrop, with familiar tunes such as "St. Stephen" and "China Doll." An homage to the Dead's often improvisational style, the symphony includes a movement in which the orchestra will jam to "Stella Blue." The lobby of the Meyerhoff will feature an array of memorabilia and photography paying tribute to The Grateful Dead and counterculture.
The Music Center at Strathmore: Four Seasons, Tchaikovsky, Leon Fleisher's 80th Birthday, Gershwin and Bernstein
A highlight of summer at the Music Center at Strathmore, the BSO's Strathmore Summer Nights begins on Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. with a pre-concert "Party on the Patio"-the perfect way to enjoy a summer evening, with dinner, refreshing drinks and light fare available for purchase.
The BSO at Strathmore summer season opens on Thursday, July 10 with a unique account of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, intermingled with Piazzolla's tango-infused Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, led by BSO concertmaster Jonathan Carney. The BSO last performed this powerful and unique arrangement to a sold-out house at Strathmore in April 2007.
On Thursday, July 17, conductor Christian Knapp makes his BSO debut with an all-Tchaikovsky program featuring selections from Swan Lake and the complete Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy. Hailed by The New York Times for her "fiery, rhapsodic playing," violinist Jennifer Koh also makes her BSO debut on this program with one of the best known works in the repertoire, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.
Legendary pianist and conductor Leon Fleisher leads an all-Mozart program on Thursday, July 24, in celebration of his 80th birthday. The program will feature Symphony No. 35, "Haffner," Symphony No. 40, "The Great G Minor," and Piano Concerto No. 12.
On Thursday, July 31, esteemed conductor and pianist Bramwell Tovey makes his BSO debut, leading the Orchestra in American favorites, including Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue, and Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. The concert also features one of Tovey's newest compositions, Urban Runway, as well as his arrangement of "America" from West Side Story.
Family Fun at Oregon Ridge
For more than 20 years, the BSO at Oregon Ridge has been a Baltimore-area summer tradition, drawing tens of thousands for family fun, music and fireworks in the wooded enclaves of the Cockeysville park. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and local vendors will be onsite with food and beverages available for purchase. Concertgoers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics for a full evening of entertainment with the BSO. Each concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and concludes with a brilliant fireworks display.
The BSO's 2008 summer season kicks off July 3, 4, and 5 with the Star-Spangled Spectacular, an all-American salute to our nation's founding. Guest conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos leads this celebration, which includes patriotic favorites such as Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. Each concert will begin with the National Anthem, led by winners of the "BSO Idol" singing competition. (Full details about "BSO Idol," including audition information, to be announced at a later date.)
The BSO makes magic on Saturday, July 19 with Hocus Pocus, a program featuring selections from fantastical favorites including Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Patrons young and old are invited to participate in a Harry Potter costume contest, and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed. A magical fireworks display concludes the evening.
Summer at Oregon Ridge comes to a close on Saturday, July 26 as the BSO goes bluegrass with Billy and the Hillbillies. A regular fixture at Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe, the Hillbillies are part-comedy act, part-musical virtuosi, taking on bluegrass favorites such as Orange Blossom Special and Pops Hoedown. In true country style, the BSO will host a pre-concert pie-eating contest.
BSO Rocks with the Music of Led Zeppelin at Pier Six Pavilion
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra rocks out to Led Zeppelin classics in its final concert of the summer season, Saturday, August 2 at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Leon Fleisher, conductor and piano
Leon Fleisher's 80th Birthday Celebration, July 24 at Strathmore, July 25 at the Meyerhoff
Renowned pianist, conductor and teacher Leon Fleisher, now in his sixth decade before the public, started piano lessons in his native San Francisco at age four, and gave his first recital at eight. By 16, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic. He was the first American to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth of Belgium competition (1952). Fleisher's career was on a smooth upward trajectory for the next dozen years, until he was suddenly struck silent when two fingers of his right hand became immobile in 1965. Undergoing many treatments that gave only temporary relief, he was forced to "retire" when only 37 years old. This was the defining moment in his career until 1992, when he began treatments that finally helped relieve his focal dystonia. For several years, Fleisher has been playing with both hands again, and won enormous critical acclaim for his first two-hand recording in 40 years. Most recently, Mr. Fleisher was a 2007 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors.
Mr. Fleisher's reputation as a conductor was quickly established when he founded the Theatre Chamber Players at The Kennedy Center in 1967 and became music director of the Annapolis Symphony in 1970 and associate conductor of the Baltimore Symphony in 1973. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Cleveland Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal and Detroit. He also had a regular association with the New Japan Philharmonic as its principal guest conductor.
