BSO SuperPops Presents a Tribute to the Music of ABBA, Thanksgiving Weekend at the Meyerhoff
No. 1 ABBA tribute band, Waterloo, to perform
Baltimore, Md. (October 26, 2009) – The No. 1 ABBA tribute band, Waterloo, is bringing the award-winning music of pop sensation ABBA to Baltimore for a Thanksgiving Weekend of upbeat musical hits on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, 2009 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. ABBA is regarded as one of the best-selling pop bands in history, with such well-known hits as “Take a Chance on Me,” “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia.” Two original ABBA musicians will join Waterloo for these performances. Please see below for complete concert details.
ABBA began with members Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad. The name is constructed from the initial of each band member’s first name. The four began working together in the early 1970s, and their first big success was winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their hit “Waterloo,” which was No. 1 on the European charts and made it into the Top 10 in the United States. By 1976, ABBA was one of the most popular musical groups in the world. Well-known ABBA hits include “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” “The Winner Takes It All” and “Take a Chance on Me.” While the original group disbanded in the early 1980s, the music of ABBA lives on in tribute bands and in productions such as the critically acclaimed musical Mamma Mia! (the musical premiered on Broadway in 2001 and was made into a film in 2008 starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan).
About Waterloo
Formed by Katja Nord and Camilla Dahlin (now Hedrén), Waterloo began performing in clubs around Sweden in 1996-1997. Norway discovered Waterloo and a long collaboration started in 2000, establishing Waterloo as the number one ABBA band in Norway. Later that same year Katja and Camilla were selected as one of the 10 competitors in the European Soundmix Contest, "Stars in Euro Eyes," which was held in Manchester.
In 2001, Waterloo collaborated with the Danish production company CS Entertainment ApS and produced "ABBA - THE SHOW," the story of ABBA presented by Waterloo together with National Symphony Orchestra of London, conducted by Matthew Freeman. That fall "ABBA - THE SHOW" went on a three-week concert house tour through Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Concerts were sold out and the reviews saluted the concept.
In 2007, ABBA—THE SHOW played a completely sold-out house at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. The Royal Albert Hall show was the kick-off for an extensive German Arena tour followed by a UK Arena tour in 2008. Waterloo continues to build the band as the most professional ABBA group today.
