Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces Jonathan Kretschmer as New Second Trumpet
 
Baltimore, Md. (January 11, 2010) – Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) announced today that Music Director Marin Alsop and the BSO Artistic Advisory Committee has appointed Jonathan Kretschmer second trumpet. Mr. Kretschmer first day will be January 18, 2010. Mr. Kretschmer, a native of Lafayette, California, brings a wide variety of performance experience to this post, most recently having served as the artist-in-residence and second trumpet with Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) for six seasons.

About Jonathan Kreschmer
After six seasons as an artist-in-residence and second trumpet with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO), Jonathan Kretschmer was recently appointed second trumpet with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Kretschmer previously served as the principal trumpet of the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and second trumpet of the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Kretschmer has performed with the Grand Rapids Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Battle Creek Brass Band. Mr. Kretschmer has had the privilege to make music with many notable conductors, including James Conlon, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert and James DePreist.

Mr. Kretschmer was a trumpet instructor at Kalamazoo College and Albion College. As an avid proponent of chamber music, he performed regularly as a member of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, the Grand Valley State University Faculty Brass Quintet and Kalamazoo Brass, of which he was co-founder.

Originally from Lafayette, California, Mr. Kretschmer’s love of orchestral trumpet was sparked by attending a live performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition played by the San Francisco Youth Orchestra, an ensemble which he was invited to join in 1997. After a brief stint studying molecular biology at the University of California at San Diego, he transferred to Indiana University at Bloomington and earned a bachelors degree in music, studying with Ed Cord and John Rommel. He then attended The Juilliard School and studied with Mark Gould, earning a masters degree in music. Additional important influences include Jay Rizzetto, Raymond Mase, Philip Smith, Scott Thornburg and his parents.
