Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein composed a line of outstanding Broadway successes during their sixteen-year run in the 1940s and '50s including The Sound of Music and South Pacific. Oklahoma! was the duo's first collaboration, and it became so instantly popular that it was made into an Academy Award winning musical film in 1955. In addition to the main title, the film's soundtrack includes "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'", "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and "People Will Say We're in Love" and topped the 1956 album charts. Like Oklahoma!, The King and
I also includes well-known Rodgers and Hammerstein hits, including "Getting to Know You", "Shall We Dance", and "The March of the Siamese Children".
The pair's musicals were groundbreaking for the musical theater genre, not only because it was the first time that music was integrated into the plot, but also because of the issues that Rodgers and Hammerstein grappled with in their works. Carousel was the first musical of its kind to feature a tragic plot that involved domestic abuse. Likewise, South Pacific featured a plot driven by racist issues, a territory to which no composer had previously dared to go.
