Chang Woo Lee was raised in South Korea, where her oldest brother worked in a violin shop. It was his idea that she should learn to play the cello. A naturally gifted musician, she excelled so greatly that she won first prize in the nation's most prestigious music competition, while still in high school. Soon after, she played for the legendary cellist Janos Starker, who was in Seoul on a concert tour. He promptly offered her a full scholarship to Indiana University to study with him. Upon graduation from IU, she played with orchestras in Mexico and Canada before joining the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1978 as Associate Principal Cellist. Since then, Ms. Lee has appeared as soloist with the BSO, and has taught many young musicians who are now pursuing professional careers internationally. Audiences and students alike — including cellists at the BSO Academy and the World Doctors Orchestra — have responded to her artistry and coaching with overwhelming enthusiasm. Her crossover CD of popular songs, "Invitation to Romance", is available at the Symphony Associates gift shop.
