BSO Music Director Marin Alsop lost both parents last year within a span of 11 days. When she takes the podium, though, she hears the instruments her parents played, which Alsop has loaned to BSO musicians. Alsop talked about the instrument and her musician parents recently with Michael Cooper of The New York Times.
“The sound is like their voice, in a way,” Ms. Alsop said. “When I grew up, every day they practiced hours and hours and hours. I probably heard more from their instruments than from them, in their own voices. I went to their concerts all the time, and the three of us played chamber music all the time. Hearing them now, it feels very comforting.”
