A formidable interpreter of Rachmaninoff, Marin Alsop taps into the composer’s vein of Romantic melancholy, nostalgic for the Russia of his youth. The Baltimore-themed first half opens with a 1952 overture by locally born Alan Shulman, conducted by Peabody alum Joseph Young. Piano giant Leon Fleisher performs one of his iconic pieces, the Piano Concerto for Left Hand by Prokofiev.
