Ha Young Jung, Principal Double Bass of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, is internationally acclaimed for her commanding artistry, technical brilliance, and deeply expressive performances. Recognized as one of the leading double bassists of her generation, she has captivated audiences around the world as both a soloist and orchestral musician.

Born in South Korea, Jung began her musical journey at the age of three, studying violin and piano before expanding her musical training to include trumpet and flute. During her adolescence in the United Kingdom, she sang as a dedicated chorister throughout her high school years, cultivating a broad musical foundation that would later shape her artistry before continuing her studies in the United States.

Before joining the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as Principal Double Bass, Jung served as Principal Bass of the New Jersey Symphony. She has also performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic and has appeared as a guest artist with many of the world’s finest orchestras and chamber ensembles, establishing a reputation for exceptional musicianship, versatility, and artistic leadership.

An award-winning artist on the international stage, Jung has earned top honors at many of the world’s most prestigious competitions. Her accolades include the Koussevitzky Young Artist Award (New York, 2013), Silver Medal at the Serge Koussevitzky International Double Bass Competition (St. Petersburg, 2007), First Prize at the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition (USA, 2007), the Grand Prix at the International String Competition (Moscow, 2006), and the Solti Foundation’s Musician of the Year Award (Belgium, 2006).

Jung’s performances have been featured in live broadcasts throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America on distinguished outlets including New York’s WQXR, the United Kingdom’s BBC Radio 3, Israel’s Kol HaMusica, and Russia’s Kultura Channel.

A dedicated performer and educator, Jung holds degrees from the Royal College of Music (B.M.), The Juilliard School (M.M.), Yale University (Artist Diploma), and Boston University, where she earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in 2024. Her distinguished professional affiliations include Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, the New York Philharmonic as a Teaching Artist, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
