Christine Murphy joined the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Flute in 2019 following her appointment by Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop. In addition to her role with the Baltimore Symphony, she has performed as a guest musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and numerous other ensembles across the United States.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Christine has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Miami’s New World Center. She has received awards and prizes from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, the National Flute Association, the Musicians Club of Women, and the Chicago Flute Club.

A dedicated educator, Christine has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland School of Music and the Atlantic Music Festival and maintains a private studio in Baltimore.

Originally from the Chicagoland area, Christine began studying the flute at age seven. She earned a Master of Music degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University, where she participated in the Columbia–Juilliard Exchange Program. Her primary teachers include Leone Buyse, Robert Langevin, Hideko Amano, and Donald Peck.
